Holding Court by K.C. Held
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
The best way for me to describe Holding Court is by saying it's a charming, light mystery read! It is very fast paced and quite enjoyable!
We start off by meeting our main character, Jules, and her family who appears to each have their own psychic ability of some sort. Jules has what she refers to as "PTS" - where she blurts out random sayings that make no sense at the time, but in the end somehow come true. Jules is such an interesting character and I absolutely loved her! She's smart, quirky, and hilarious. I legit laughed out loud while reading this book at least 10 times.
Jules lives in a small town and ends up having to get a job at Tudor Castle where most of her classmates also work at. This is when the story begins to get more interesting and becomes more of a mystery read than anything else. Jules finds a dead body hidden in the castle and can't seem to stay away from drama or trouble after that.
As the story continues, we are introduced to more characters who are all likeable.. Especially Jule's long time crush, Grayson, who is definitely sweet and swoon-worthy! I think the romance went well with the story, it was a bit predictable but I didn't hate it because Jules and Grayson were so adorably awkward that it was hard not to love them. I enjoyed all of the characters in the story, they all played a part in it!
I wish we got a little more character development and maybe some more world building though. I enjoyed K.C. Held's writing, especially her dialogue which was great. I could've used more descriptions while some of the characters were talking or during certain situations. It wasn't too bad though.
Everything wrapped up nicely in the last few chapters. Like I said, this was a very quick read and I think it was perfect for this story because if it was dragged out, it would've been too much.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. There were things I wanted more of when it came to the writing, but the characters made this book enjoyable. It was funny and sweet and managed to be more than just a sweet romance story! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries or contemporaries!
